3. Relieve Stress - Gain energy
Stress is physiological response to an unexpected change - a change that requires adaptation on our part. Thirst and hunger is a physiological response from our body.

When we experience stress, changes which can happen to our bodies include:
  • The release of hormones
  • The shut down of our entire digestive system
  • The release of sugar into our blood stream
  • An increase in the heartbeat
  • A faster breathing rate
  • Perspiration
  • Tense muscles in our limbs
  • Much more

  • Changes take place within our environment and we control with our coping skills

    4. Procrastination

    What is Procrastination?
    Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task which needs to be accomplished. This can lead to feelings of guilt, inadequacy, depression and self-doubt among students. Procrastination has a high potential for painful consequences. It interferes with the academic and personal success of individuals.

    Overcoming Procrastination
    1. Sense of urgency
    2. Ability to separate the relevant from the irrelevant
    3. Recognize self-defeating problems such as; fear and anxiety, difficulty concentrating, poor time management, indecisiveness and perfectionism.
    4. Identify your own goals, strengths and weaknesses, values and priorities.
    5. Compare your actions with the values you feel you have. Are your values consistent with your actions?
    6. Discipline yourself to use time wisely: Set priorities.
    7. Motivate yourself: Dwell on success, not on failure. Break large assignments into small tasks.
    8. Set realistic goals.
    9. Modify your environment: Eliminate or minimize noise/ distraction. Ensure adequate lighting. Have necessary equipment at hand.
    10. Don't waste time going back and forth to get things.
    11. Don't get too comfortable when studying. A desk and straight-backed chair is usually best (a bed is no place to study). Be neat! Take a few minutes to straighten your desk. This can help to reduce day-dreaming.

    How do you overcome procrastination in your life?

    Action Exercise
    1. Select one major task where procrastination is holding you back
    2. Make out a detailed list of every single thing you will have to do to complete that task... think on paper
    3. Select the single most important item on your list and gather everything you will need to start and complete that one item.
    4. Set a specific time when you will start and work single-mindedly on that task until it is finished.
    5. Break your largest tasks and goals down into bite-size chunks, and concentrate on starting and completing one part of the job at a time.
    6. Accept 100 percent responsibility for starting and finishing your major task; refuse to make excuses or rationalize pitting it off.
    7. Visualize your working with a sense of urgency; program your mind by repeating the words "Do it now!" over and over.

    5. Self Massage
    • Massage increases the fluid flow in the blood and lymphatic system
    • Getting in touch with your own body can often bring you a better awareness of the difficulties going on in your life.
         - Take care of your feet
         - Take care of your shoulders and neck
         - Take care of your legs

    6. Assignment
    • Work with your buddy on the following areas:
      • Discuss situations where you've actied on your intuition
      • What are you continuing to work on with organization and de-clutter
      • What is your greatest tool to get over stress
      • What areas are you improving on with procrastination and what else can you do to get better?
