Leadership Success Tips

WHAT A BUMMER - THERE GOES SUMMER

Labor Day is upon us and it signals the approaching end of summer. The end of fun in the sun-of shorter workdays, longer daylight hours, vacations. Although we don't labor on Labor Day, after the celebration is over it's back to work with a vengeance.

It seems that before a vacation, we work our tail off to tie up loose ends, go brain dead for the week or two we're off work, then come back and work like crazy to catch up. It's as though our time at work and our time away from work exist in two separate universes.

What happened to balance? What about a smoother blend between work and play? What would our work life be like if we created balance on a daily, weekly, monthly and even yearly basis?

Start with a plan
Achieving balance in all areas of your life takes a plan, which once initiated requires only occasional upkeep. If you're more linear you may want to make a list of all your activities and see how much time you spend in each. Or you can create a time log in a chart format that you keep for several weeks to see where your time goes.

Slice up your life
A more visual method is to create a pie chart. Draw a circle and think of each area of your life as a slice. You decide which areas to include such as work, family, recreation, personal, household, etc. Make the slices equivalent to how much time you spend doing each. From this visual observation, you can choose where you need to make changes to achieve greater balance.

Design a custom life
A life in balance includes an appropriate amount of time doing those activities that make your life well-rounded. You decide what's appropriate, however, keep in mind the balance you seek to create. Transitioning naturally from work into family, household or leisure activities will assure that you appreciate each aspect of life and see them as interwoven, and not separate. Take regular breaks throughout your workday. If you work at home, take an afternoon nap or a walk. Consider taking several shorter vacations throughout the year rather than one longer one. It's your life to design as you see fit.

Origins of Labor Day
For those curious about the origins of Labor Day, here's the short version: The first Labor Day public holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. Its original purpose, which still remains, was the dedication to the social and economic achievements of American workers. During the early years of the holiday, a street parade was held to exhibit "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the workers and their families.

Labor Day is a time for Americans to acknowledge the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well being of our country. That includes you and your staff. Most importantly, acknowledge yourself for your leadership--and if you want to offer your greatest contribution, learn to live a life of balance.

Getting support
It's easier to make changes when you have support and accountability. Consider working with a business or life coach. Find out more by contacting
