Highly Effective Goal Setting for the New Year

The only goals worth accomplishing are those that are meaningful to you-goals you set based on your values, desires, interests and lifelong ambitions. These are the goals you will work to achieve, and you will do what is necessary because you are motivated to receive the benefits attached to the goals.

So how do you determine which goals to go after? How do you limit yourself when you have too many goals and not enough time? What do you do when you have not been able to achieve a goal? Let's take it one step at a time so 2006 will be the year you practice highly effective goal setting and goal getting!

  1. Determine your most desired goals. Choose from different areas in your personal and professional life such as: relationships, leisure, personal development, spiritual, health, career and financial or other categories that are meaningful to you. For now list as many goals as you have. Next look at what obstacles you might expect to encounter and plan how you will overcome them.

  2. Decide which goals you will choose first and select target completion dates. Consider one goal from each category. Too many will overwhelm you; decide how many you have the time, energy and motivation to include. Now list the benefits for each goal, the drive that will propel you forward. In the example below, the benefits may be: lower my blood pressure, fit into my clothes, feel good about myself, have more energy.

  3. Set up a tracking system* to chart your daily progress. . If you don't write down your goals and your action steps, you will be less likely to do what is necessary. The chart is to keep you accountable to yourself and help you stay focused in the face of distractions.

  4. Insert at least one action item from each goal into your daily calendar. Add another when that one is accomplished. You may have a lot of action steps to each goal, so to avoid procrastination take one at a time and make it a priority by fitting it into your daily schedule.

  5. Review your progress periodically, whether daily, weekly or monthly. Rarely is a goal achieved by a straight line; you will have to make course adjustments and may even decide to drop a goal if it doesn't work for you any more. You can then replace it with another goal. This isn't giving up; it's simply being honest with what you truly desire.

  6. Schedule rewards along the way. The benefits from the goal are rewards in themselves, such as feeling more attractive, however a new outfit is a great reward when you lose those 20 lbs. Schedule a massage when you lose the first 10 lbs., just to stay pumped up as you make progress.

*If you'd like to set up your own goal tracking system you can use the Microsoft Word table format or an Excel spreadsheet and do something like this:

Category Specific Goal/Benefits Actions Support Challenges Expected Strategies to Overcome
Health Lose 20 lbs.; feel healthier, more attractive Join a weight loss program LA Weight Loss Tempted by bus. & social functions Eat before function
Join a gym and go 3x/week Friend or Trainer Too busy to go to gym Make appt. with a trainer

If you prefer using an existing worksheet, you may be able to find one you like on the Internet. Here's one you can use to get you started: LINK.

Let 2006 be the best year of your life-the year you set and get the goals that are most meaningful to you.
